Today, i.e. on March 8th 2018, the world is celebrating Women’s day and Pakistan too is doing so with aplomb.
We are celebrating our women of substance applauding the high achievers and mourning the loss of the victims.
And we should! Our country was realized by the Quaid-e-Azam who had his sister Fatimah Jinnah right by his
side. It’s a country which had the likes of Begum Jahanara Shahnawaz and Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan
playing pivotal roles within the independence struggle. We are the first Muslim country with a fairly elected woman
Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Need I go on?
Pakistan has a history of giving birth to great women, women of substance, women who have left their mark desi and
internationally. But today, on 8th March, let us not just celebrate the high achievers. Today let us understand that
Women’s Day is a celebration of all women. It’s a day to mark womanhood. Every single girl born as a Daughter
who goes on to become a sister, a wife, a mother is celebrated today. Because every woman everyday is a high
achiever in her sphere of influence.
She nurtures, she protects, she moulds. It’s us, the women who shape the perspectives of the coming generations and
the definition of the current. It is us who have the power to define the world. All we need to do is overcome the
struggle within us.To tell ourselves that we are empowered That we have what it takes to be women of substance.
That no matter how trivial we might deem our existence we are every last ones of us important.
And only you can tell yourself that empower yourself by first breaking free of the shackles of oppression in your mind
and tell yourself that you do not need others to empower you. You were born with that right and then work to make it
a reality. That is all it takes. That first step towards your freedom. And that is what we need to celebrate!
Our woman hood!
