One of a triple girl gang I landed at Nueplex again tonight and this time I was watching Phillauri.
Since the Indie Pak tension I had studiously avoided going to any Bollywood flick but caved in today when the homies insisted. Frankly it also happened as I had caught the trailer of Phillauri a couple of times and the movie seemed a win win with a great concept!
Kanan (Suraj Sharma) marries a tree to ward off back luck before his wedding (As neighbors to the Indies we know that that happens all the time so it was culturally an on point concept) but the tree turns out to be the resting place of Shashi (Anushka Sharma), who lived and loved there almost a hundred years ago and so she considers herself the bride of Kanan. As a result of this marriage, Shashi is bound to Kanan, who must figure out a way to take care of the unfinished business that’s causing her to linger around and consequently wrecking his marriage even before it’s started.
Kanan does a fab job as a confused desi/waleti millennial and Shashi rocks when portraying her role as a secret poet in the early 1900s.
However having said that, the movie was nothing more than the trailer promised. Even though it had a great concept, some really funny moments and a good cast, it failed to be the sensational rom com it just easily could’ve been.
However all in all it’s good for a few mediocre laughs.
